Book Review of Immortal by Morning (Argeneau, #37)

A Dive into Immortal by Morning: Ghosts, Romance, and a Whole Lot of Laughter

As a longtime fan of Lynsay Sands, I’ve often found myself chuckling over her unique blend of humor, romance, and extraordinary scenarios, and Immortal by Morning is no exception. In this 37th installment of the Argeneau series, we’re treated to another enchanting tale filled with sass and charm. I couldn’t resist diving into this world again, especially with a premise that promises a blend of laugh-out-loud moments and a gripping murder mystery. Who can resist a story where a lovable Labrador unearths more than just bones in the backyard?

We meet Crispinus “Crispin” Delacort, an immortal enforcer who, despite having centuries under his belt, finds himself clueless when it comes to love. Enter Abril Newman, the fiercely independent heroine who sparks instant chemistry with Crispin, even amid the chaos of a decades-old murder mystery. Their relationship jumps off the page—filled with tension from their utterly mismatched first encounter to awkward “courting” moments. I appreciated the gradual unveiling of their connection, but I did feel it was rushed due to the story’s brisk pacing, almost as if the romance was crammed alongside the heart-pounding action. It’s hard not to root for Crispin as he awkwardly navigates this terrain, but I did wish for a more natural build-up.

One element that stands out is the mystery aspect, which keeps the wheels turning. While the pacing fluctuates—sometimes dragging slightly—the tension ramps up effectively as the story progresses. However, I found myself longing for Crispin and Abril’s interactions to lean more into their growing connection rather than spend so much time on Crispin explaining immortality. As a devoted reader of this series, I found those interludes a little repetitive and at times reminiscent of a textbook lecture rather than the delightful banter I know and love. Maybe it’s time for Lucian to step in with his endearingly grumpy sarcasm to deliver those vital tidbits!

While the writing had its stiff moments—certain phrases felt overly formal, breaking the flow—Sands’s distinct humor shines through, even in perilous situations that tread the fine line between danger and absurdity. There were moments where the villain’s monologue felt so clichéd that it evoked a nostalgic, Scooby-Doo vibe; I half-wondered if they’d pull off their mask to reveal an unexpected nemesis!

Is Immortal by Morning groundbreaking? Not quite. But is it an enjoyable, easy-to-digest paranormal romance with a charming hero and a heroine who stands her ground? Absolutely! Fans of the Argeneau series will undoubtedly love the familiar humor and dynamics that create such a cozy reading experience—murder or not. If you’re new to this universe, I recommend diving into earlier books for a richer context, but this one still adds to Sands’s ever-growing immortal tale.

In conclusion, if you’re in search of a lighthearted escape that weaves romance with mystery, then Immortal by Morning should find a cozy spot on your bookshelves. It’s perfect for those who enjoy quirky characters navigating the balance of passion and peril. For me, the adventure was a pleasant reminder of why I love this series: it’s comfort reading at its finest, filled with laughter, love, and just a hint of the macabre. Happy reading!
