Review of Ensnared by the Stone Freak (Twisted Carnival) by C.M. Stone

When I first stumbled upon Ensnared by the Stone Freak, I was immediately captivated by its quirky title and the promise of an enchanted, somewhat dark love story. C.M. Stone has a knack for blending fantasy elements with relatable human experiences, and I was eager to dive into this tale of curses, love, and self-discovery. Upon finishing, I found myself both enchanted and pensive, reflecting on how Stone balances the fantastical with sharp emotional truths.

The narrative introduces us to Camryn “Cammy” Mayfield, a high-powered lawyer who seems to have it all—but, like many of us, is secretly battling disillusionment in her professional life. Her character is a refreshing take on the workaholic trope, allowing readers to see her evolve as she confronts the reality of her mundane existence. Then there’s Halvard, the titular “Stone Freak,” a mysterious character cursed to turn those he gazes upon into stone. His lineage ties back to the fascinating world of gargoyles (yes, there’s a fun little lesson on the difference between gargoyles and grotesques woven into the story), which adds a layer of intrigue to his character. Their unlikely pairing is marked by a push-pull dynamic filled with tension and discovery, as each character challenges the other in ways they didn’t think possible.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its eclectic cast of side characters—Cammy’s friend, who conceals her identity as a Siren, and an overly obsessive Warlock ex bring comic relief and dramatic tension alike. I particularly adored Hogzy, the wild boar, who adds a touch of whimsy. The rich tapestry of these characters helps root the more fantastical elements in relatable, human experiences, making it easy for readers to invest emotionally in their journeys.

Stone’s writing style initially took some getting used to; it has a certain rhythm that is both lyrical and playful, transporting us into this otherworldly setting. Once I acclimated, the story flowed effortlessly, and I found myself turning pages eagerly, eager to see how Cammy and Halvard would navigate their blooming connection amidst chaos. However, I did feel that some scenes, especially towards the end, could have benefited from a bit more descriptive weight—after all, just as the fire of passion ignited, I expected a rousing crescendo to follow.

One of the most memorable lines speaks to the heart of the story: “Sometimes the only way to reclaim your life is by turning to stone.” It’s a beautiful encapsulation of the characters’ struggles; they must confront their fears and biases to truly live—and love.

For those who relish a blend of romance, fantasy, and a dash of danger, Ensnared by the Stone Freak is a delightful read. It’s perfect for fans of urban fantasy who appreciate character growth alongside magical escapades. As I closed the final chapters, I couldn’t help but smile, touched by the transformation both leads undergo. C.M. Stone has not only woven a captivating tale but also sparked a sense of hope and possibility.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a whimsical escape with relatable themes of self-discovery and personal growth, this book could be your next favorite. I, for one, am thrilled to have discovered Ms. Stone, and I can’t wait to see where her imagination takes us next! ★★★★☆ – Really liked.
