Hell’s Most Incompetent Demon: An Engaging Rom-Com with a Supernatural Twist

When I first stumbled upon Hell’s Most Incompetent Demon by Sam Skyborne, the title alone sparked my curiosity. Who can resist the idea of a bumbling demon trying to navigate the complexities of love and desire? As a book blogger who revels in the intersection of romance and the fantastical, I was immediately drawn in, eager to see how this quirky premise would unfold.

The story centers around Ethan, a shy librarian who has nurtured a crush on a co-worker for what feels like an eternity. But nothing gets his heart racing quite like the chilling realization that his crush might be stepping out with someone else. Enter Malphas, Hell’s most incompetent demon, who refreshingly subverts the typical image of a demonic presence by being more inclined to save souls rather than collect them. Their meeting—prompted by a botched summoning spell designed to attract love—creates a delightful set-up for a rom-com filled with supernatural shenanigans.

The relationship between Ethan and Malphas is, at its core, about finding courage in vulnerability. I wished for more depth in their romantic interactions, as their chemistry felt a bit rushed at times. Nonetheless, their journey toward love was peppered with hilarity, thanks to the antics Mal creates while trying to help Ethan seduce his dream guy. Noah, Ethan’s best friend, acts as a grounding voice of reason, pointing out the absurdity of it all, which only adds to the ensemble’s dynamic charm.

Skyborne’s writing is both playful and engaging, with a narrative that flows effortlessly while balancing humor and heart. I particularly appreciated the witty dialogue and vivid imagery that brought the supernatural elements to life. However, there were moments when the pacing felt a bit uneven, especially during key plot developments that could have benefitted from a bit more time and buildup.

One moment that struck a sour note for me was Ethan’s attempt to negate the deal with Mal, where the stakes felt inexplicably high and uncomfortable. While I’m usually open to morally complicated moments in romance, this one crossed a line that left a lingering unease. Many readers might overlook it, but it did sit wrong with me. Nevertheless, the ultimate resolution—especially the revelations that unfold at the end—certainly made the journey worthwhile.

All in all, Hell’s Most Incompetent Demon delivers a delightful blend of humor, fantasy, and romance, making it an excellent choice for readers seeking a lighthearted story that still carries emotional weight. I would recommend it to fans of rom-coms with an otherworldly twist, especially those who enjoy the escapades of characters fumbling through love and life.

This book left me smiling, and while it may not be a perfect five-star read for me, I’m rounding up to 3.5 stars because it achieved precisely what I hoped for: pure enjoyment. If you crave a charming escapade filled with demons, laughter, and tender moments, look no further. Thank you, Sam Skyborne, for this delightful ride; I can’t wait to see what supernatural adventures await us next!
