Book Review of How to Entice a Fiend (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes, #6)

Engaging with Alice Winters’ World in How to Entice a Fiend

Alice Winters has a knack for pulling readers into her delightfully twisted vampire universe, and How to Entice a Fiend (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes, #6) was no exception. As a longtime fan, I was excited to dive back into the chaotic thrill of the Vampire Related Crimes series. Combining the usual mix of humor, action, and the occasional dash of romance, I was eager to see how Winters would blend these elements in this latest installment. However, while it enchanted me in many respects, it also left me with some mixed feelings, prompting me to explore its layers a bit deeper.

This time around, we follow Ender and Mads—two characters whose connection to the main cast is tenuous at best. Ender, introduced previously, didn’t captivate me overwhelmingly, making it surprising that his complex journey would take center stage here. Yet, as I watched him grapple with his mysterious past while trying to protect Rylee and navigate the aftermath of the vampire council’s tragic downfall, I found myself both intrigued and slightly frustrated. His character arc felt rushed, leaving me wanting more room for emotional growth—moments where he could reflect on regrets or aspirations, rather than merely push forward in action scenes.

Then there’s Mads. A delightful introduction to the crew, his scientific prowess offered a refreshing break from the usual muscle-bound vampire archetypes. I appreciated his brainy characteristics, but I craved deeper insight into his backstory and emotional layers. The duo’s dynamic made for amusing banter—especially with the Grumpy/Sunshine vibe that Winters does so well. Though the humor was a tad more subdued this time, the witty exchanges between Mads and Ender still sparkled, delighting me with pockets of laughter amidst the drama.

Ah, the romance! It’s always a significant thread in Winters’ narratives, and in this case, I found myself a bit underwhelmed. While Ender’s eventual attraction to Mads is explained, their differences were so stark that it felt like a stretch for me to fully invest in their relationship. I couldn’t help but miss the captivating chemistry shared by earlier couples like Finn and Marcus, who effortlessly drew me into their world. Mads being the ‘top’ in their pairing threw me off as well—a deviation that felt peculiar given their established dynamics.

The pacing of the plot was swift, filled with action that raced from one scene to the next. While this kept my heart pounding, it sometimes sacrificed the flow, making me pause at repetitive phrases and character names—a slight blemish in Winters’ usually polished prose.

How to Entice a Fiend has its merits, undoubtedly. The intrigue of the unresolved vampire council issues piques anticipation for future books, and I’ll be here for every turn of the page. Yet, I hope new characters bring their flavor rather than echoing the similar vibes we’ve come to expect. This volume, while entertaining, felt comfortably familiar to the point of repetitiveness.

For those new to the series, I’d recommend starting from the beginning to fully enjoy the intricacies of Winters’ world. If you relish humor and romance layered with adventure, this book could still charm you. Personally, while this entry didn’t completely sweep me off my feet, the engaging character banter and supernatural intrigue kept me entertained throughout my reading journey. Here’s to hoping the next installment brings fresh perspectives and deeper emotional connections!
