Book Review of Luca (Veiled City #3)

Review of Luca (Veiled City #3) by A.L. Ryan

From the moment I picked up Luca, the third installment in A.L. Ryan’s Veiled City series, I felt an irresistible pull. Revisiting the world of Cair and Luca was something I didn’t realize I desperately needed until I was wrapped up in their story once again. This book is a perfect tapestry of heart, adventure, and the kind of emotional depth that leaves you breathless.

In Luca, we find our beloved couple flourishing after a year in the Otherworld. Cair, now embracing his princely duties, navigates his responsibilities with grace, while Luca exudes a quiet yet profound happiness in his role as a “kept husband.” Their love feels palpable, filled with tenderness and a playful banter that made me grin. However, it would be remiss not to mention the storm that brews beneath this gentle surface—a temporary major character death (MCD) that strips away the joy and leaves you an emotional wreck for a chapter. I cried alongside Cair as he grappled with unbearable loss; it was incredibly heart-wrenching yet a testament to Ryan’s talent that she could evoke such intense feelings.

While the majority of the story was a comfortable embrace of love and laughter, this MCD centered around Luca’s quest to find his Fae father added layers of depth and vulnerability. Their journey into the Outerlands not only sets the stage for deeper conflicts with Cair’s tyrannical father, the king, but also allows Luca’s character to shine as he seeks connection and answers to questions that have lingered for far too long.

The pacing of the book was spot-on, and the writing flowed effortlessly. Ryan skillfully balances the challenges of love with the impending war, making every moment—both sweet and devastating—feel significant. One quote particularly struck me: “You are everything to me, do you understand?” It encapsulated the essence of their relationship, and I couldn’t help but swoon at how beautifully it conveyed their bond.

Now, one tiny hitch in the otherwise stellar ride was the milder spice, especially given the fiery chemistry these two share. Just when I thought they were about to reconnect fully after the MCD incident, their intimate moment was interrupted—totally cruel in the best (and most frustrating) way. While what we did get was sizzling hot, I found myself longing for more. Their connection deserved an ecstatic crescendo, and I couldn’t help but wish for a more satisfying exploration of their intimacy.

Despite this minor quibble, I could not rate this book anything less than 4.5 stars! My heart was too full, and the emotional impact was too significant to ignore. Cair and Luca’s love story is firmly in a Happily Ever After (HEA) place, but the overarching plot promises a thrilling continuation with the upcoming Orion’s tale. I simply cannot wait to see where Ryan takes us next!

Luca is a heartfelt journey of love, loss, and adventure that I wholeheartedly recommend, especially to those who have followed the Veiled City series. It’s a rollercoaster of emotion that leaves you breathless and a tiny bit heartbroken—an experience you won’t soon forget!

Looking forward to Orion’s story next—who will his love interest be? Until then, happy reading! ❤️

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
