Book Review: Renaissance Bear (Renaissance Shifters Book 3) by Murphy Lawless

As soon as I spotted Renaissance Bear on my Kindle Unlimited shelf, I felt a giddy anticipation bubbling inside me. Maybe it was the charming cover, or the promise of shifters and romance that drew me in, but I knew I was in for a delightful ride with Murphy Lawless at the helm. The Renaissance Shifters series has been a fantastic exploration of love, family, and the twisty paths one must traverse to find their true self, and this third installment certainly didn’t disappoint.

At the heart of this story is Alissandra, affectionately known as Alis, and Jon, who finds himself ensnared in a whirlwind of emotions, confusion, and a touch of destiny. Unlike his seemingly lackadaisical earlier persona, Jon’s character blossoms in Renaissance Bear. He’s not just that annoying brother anymore; he has depth. Watching him grapple with his feelings for Alis—culminating in adorable moments that added whimsy to the narrative—was an absolute joy. Their budding romance is laced with tension and loyalty that draws you in, particularly as they navigate their complex family loyalties.

Lawless has a knack for balancing humor with heartfelt moments, and I found myself chuckling out loud at times while also shedding a wistful tear. The interplay between Jon and his brother, Laurie, showcased a brotherly dynamic that felt both authentic and relatable. Who hasn’t felt the push-and-pull of familial expectations? This was particularly poignant for me, as it resonated with the real-life struggles many of us face in our own families.

The writing style in Renaissance Bear was fluid and engaging, with a pace that kept my pages turning. I particularly loved how Lawless intersperses suspense within the romance, which took the story beyond a mere love affair. There’s an underlying evil brewing in their small town, and as the story unfolds, the mystery intensifies. Just when I thought I had it figured out, Lawless threw in an unexpected twist that shocked me in the best way—reminding me why I love a good shifter romance!

One of my favorite highlights was the cheeky banter between Alis and Jon. Their chemistry sparkled on the page, making it quite hard not to root for their happy ending. Alis’s fierce loyalty and complexity added depth to her character, making her much more than just Jon’s mate; she is a warrior in her own right—a duality that deepened my admiration for her.

For readers who relish in well-crafted shifter romances infused with humor, surprise twists, and endearing characters, Renaissance Bear is surely the next book you should pick up. While it masterfully stands alone, you may find yourself yearning to dive into the Virtue Shifters series as well, as Lawless sprinkles in some familiar faces that were delightful surprises.

In conclusion, Renaissance Bear touched my heart in unexpected ways. I found not only a captivating story but also a deeper connection to themes of loyalty, love, and the messiness of family. If you crave a feel-good romance that leaves you chuckling and sighing in equal measure, join Alis and Jon on their journey. I promise, you won’t regret it one bit!
