Radiant Shadows
by Melissa Marr
Book Synopsis (from Goodreads)
Half-human and half-faery, Ani is driven by her hungers.
Those same appetites also attract powerful enemies and uncertain allies, including Devlin. He was created as an assassin and is brother to the faeries’ coolly logical High Queen and to her chaotic twin, the embodiment of War. Devlin wants to keep Ani safe from his sisters, knowing that if he fails, he will be the instrument of Ani’s death.
Ani isn’t one to be guarded while others fight battles for her, though. She has the courage to protect herself and the ability to alter Devlin’s plans—and his life. The two are drawn together, each with reason to fear the other and to fear for one another. But as they grow closer, a larger threat imperils the whole of Faerie. Will saving the faery realm mean losing each other?
Review
This book is part of the Wicked Lovely series. It’s not a sequel to Fragile Eternity, but fortunately, it does answer some pondering thoughts left behind.
Radiant Shadows introduces new characters and keeps the old ones too.
It goes deeper into the workings of this Faerie world, how certain courts work, how they started, and who controls what.
Although, I will admit there were some slow moments, it did keep up a quick pace, leaving the reader thinking from chapter to chapter.
After reading my fair share of faerie lit, I had this built up of image of faeries being these celestial beings, only caring about the greater good of themselves with the occasional fall-in-love-circumstances. But Marr was able to take that image away and replace it with a different kind of being: one that has feelings, one that knows a lot but is still facing what’s to come in the future.
I really enjoyed being able to learn the workings of Faerie and the other Courts, mainly the High and Dark Court, being able to see this set up mental image be replaced with something else.
It has love in all forms.
I was sad to read “The Penultimate Volume…”
Can’t wait for the next in the series!
I got this ARC from Harper Teen!
