Book Review of Dragon Forged (Dragon Kings, #10)

Book Review: Dragon Forged (Dragon Kings, #10) by Donna Grant

You know that feeling when you dive headfirst into a new world, and it feels both exhilarating and a little intimidating? That was me when I picked up Dragon Forged, the latest installment in Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings series. This marks my first foray into Grant’s captivating universe, and I must admit, I approached it with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given its deep lore and rich history. With the promise of dragon shifters and political intrigue set against the backdrop of a magical realm and Scotland’s rugged charm, how could I resist?

At its core, Dragon Forged serves up a delicious blend of political drama and romance, centered around Emilia, a seer, and Hector, a battle-hardened Dragon King. From the get-go, I felt like I’d jumped into a narrative whirlpool—each chapter left me with burning questions about the complex layers of Zora and its ancient magic. While my initial confusion felt daunting, I was soon guided by Grant’s deft world-building. The inclusion of a map was an absolute lifesaver, allowing me to visualize the shimmering landscapes and geopolitical webs that intertwined the characters’ lives.

As I delved deeper, I found myself enthralled by the political machinations at play. While romance typically takes center stage in many fantasy novels, here the political intrigue was undeniably captivating. Emilia’s struggles and her evolving role within Zora’s delicate balance of power pulled me in. In fact, I found myself more invested in the secrecy and strategic alliances than the romance itself. It was a refreshing change, and I reveled in the tension and surprise twists that kept me on my toes.

However, I did feel the romance between Emilia and Hector left something to be desired. Although their connection was palpable, I craved more of that delicious, slow-burn yearning that keeps readers turning pages with bated breath. There were tender moments, yet a little more tension and build-up would have really taken the stakes higher. Similarly, I felt that a sprinkle of humor could have lifted certain scenes, adding a playful note to the otherwise serious tone.

What I adored most about Dragon Forged were the characters—particularly the side characters, who added depth and vibrancy to the story. Emilia’s journey of self-discovery was beautifully crafted, and her determination made her relatable and easy to root for. Every character struggled with their own burdens, but it was the side characters that truly brought the narrative to life. Their quirks and complexities enriched the story, making Zora feel like a place bustling with life and history.

In conclusion, if you’re a fan of dragon shifters, intricate plots with a healthy sprinkle of political drama, and are open to diving headfirst into a richly woven lore, then Dragon Forged may just be your next great read. While I may have initially felt out of my depth, I came away from this adventure feeling inspired and eager to explore more of Grant’s world. For me, this is just the beginning of a magical journey—after all, I’ve got a few more Dragon Kings to meet!
