Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side
by Beth Fantaskey
Book Synopsis (from Goodreads)
The undead can really screw up your senior year…
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.
Review
When seeing this book I was sure it was just a cute, little, guide to dating the creepy vampire that happens to prowl on the town. So I never picked it up. (Never judge a book by its title.)
But I finally did and realized: “Oh. Maybe this is the dark, creepy, vampire romance I am looking for?”
Although this book is not completely filled with brooding vampires and total creepiness, with it’s light-hearted humor and spunky teen life sinking in at times, it does hold a dark theme constantly.
Jessica knew she was adopted, a child born in Romania but raised in America. But she didn’t dwell on that fact to often. So when Lucius comes to announce she was born to be is wife, to live with him in Romania, she’s not that happy.
Jessica’s Guide was a fun read. It was able to portray Jessica growing up in a short amount of time and had a wonderful, even though at times hidden, story line. The ending left me wanting more but satisfied!
